PRIVACY POLICY AND DISCLAIMER
This section is the nutshell version of my Privacy Policy and Disclaimer . It's so annoying to have blood pouring out of your hand, and be waiting for stitches, because you sliced it open trying to cut the cover of a book to make a copy of the jacket for your website (only to find out you could download the picture from the bookstore anyway--you didn't need to make it yourself) and have Nurse Nancy at the emergency room push a Privacy Policy in your face and demand that you sign it. "With which hand? The one that's bleeding or the one applying pressure?" "It doesn't matter," she says. "Just sign it and try not to get too much blood on it."
Everywhere we go, privacy policies have become a priority. The web is no different.
Only nonpersonal data will be collected about you when you're at my site by third-person parties (advertising affiliates) when you click a link. They'll assign an id number to you for purposes of paying me anything they might owe me or how many songs you've played. However, once you're on a third party's site--we're all independent businesses--I have no responsibility for their privacy policies. Although I've done my best to affiliate only with businesses adhering to the highest standards, I'm not responsible for their behavior. They're not responsible for mine. That means, you need to read the policies on each site you visit.
I'll collect a minimum of nonpersonal data about you--for instance on my site counter or if you vote in a poll. Then I'll use that nonpersonal data to see what pages visitors like best, how often you return there, so I can improve this site. Regarding the polls, this nonpersonal data will keep track of how often you vote.
Any personal information collected by my sites about you will only be what you offer voluntarily. MelodyBeattie.net will ask for personal information to use the site. The information I ask for will be basic--enough to ensure privacy and safety on the site for me and all the guests. If you want to post on the bulletin boards, use chat rooms--anywhere you'll have access to my site--I'll ask for basic information about you. I will use that information only to guarantee the safety and respectability of the sites. If you buy products (if I sell them) directly from the site or if you want me to send you autographed bookplates, I'll need your name and address to complelte the tasks.
I will not sell or give away any personal information you volunteer to this or any MelodyBeattie site. I will be the person responsibile for securing all personal information in a safe place. When you give information voluntarily, you'll be told how this will be used. For instance, at the end of this page you'll find a Guest Book. I'd love to have you sign it. But a quick glance will tell you that you can either sign it, or click and see who else has sisgned and anything else they've posted. That means the information in the Guest Book will be available for anyone and everyone to see and if you don't want anyone to see you've been here you should either a) use an abbreviated or fictitious name; or b) not sign it.
You also have the right--if you have volunteered any personal information--to change your mind and request that I destroy it. Send an email to Melody@MelodyBeattie.com, tell me what information you put and where, and then request that I remove and destroy it. Within seven days, I will--no questions asked and no explanation necessary.
I will remove any obscene or inappropriate language from any posts or place on my site. I reserve the right to determine what's inappropriate and what's not by generally accepted standards of behavior. I may request that someone not visit the sites until that person stops obscenely posting or using inappropriate language or online conduct.
By using this website you're agreeing to the terms and conditions of my Privacy Policy & Disclaimer. It's a legal, binding document. That means you should read it in its entirety by clicking the link Privacy Policy and Disclaimer. You'll be redirected to another site where my policy is certified and filed. When my policy appears, read it. if you don't agree to the above terms or the complete terms you read, you should leave my sites immediately. (I've actually begun reading these to understand what I'm agreeing to, and so I don't do anything I said I wouldn't.)
So, knowing all this, you are now fullly informed when you do things such as sign the Guest Book or register to write your thoughts and opinions in a Bulletin Board or Forum. Plus, information will be posted by those places where different or various privacy policies apply too. Information is power and you are now fullly empowered and informed. When you sign the Guest Book, for instance, other people besides me--strangers--will have access to whatever data you enter. Also be aware that you can change your mind. If you wake up in the middlle of the night horrified at what you've done, send an email to Melody@MelodyBeattie.com, tell me what your name is and where you put information, and ask to have it immediately and completely removed. We'll do that as soon as we can, within seven days. Also, we won't sell or give away any data you enter anywhere in the site. On the lighter and brighter side, I will personally read every message you send me and post unless I'm in another dimension writing a teleplay, article, or book. Now that you have all this information, we can actually have a conversation. All these legal necessities are important. In this age of advanced technology, where information about us is so readily available, it's important to know who knows what about us, how it will be used, for what purposes, and when. Links to the complete Privacy Policy & Disclaimer will also be at the bottom of every page.
Thank you for your patience and time in understanding and absorbing this critical information.
